My 6 year-old nephew, Jessie Hayes Jr, was injured on Chicago Public School grounds (Arthur Ashe Elementary School) at the end of October 2018. He informed a teacher that he was kicked in the groin by a fourth grader and that he was in pain. A male school aide walked Jessie Jr to the bathroom and that was when Jessie Jr showed a piece of tissue to the male aid that he was passing blood through his urine. The incident was not reported to his Mother (LaJuanna Caldwell), he did not see a school nurse and he was not provided medical attention. Instead, he was sent back outside to finish participating in recess.

Jessie Jr remained in pain for the duration of the school day. His mother found out after Jessie Jr left school to go to daycare. It was then that his mother saw the blood on the toilet seat and inside the toilet. Jessie Jr was rushed to a children's hospital where he remained there for several days due to a severe injury to his penis. In December 2018, Jessie Jr will require surgery for multiple lacerations to the penis.

The School Administrators at Arthur Ashe Elementary School have refused to acknowledge the failure to provide duty of care, the intentional act and negligence of not notifying medical personnel, the reckless act of not taking a student injury serious and the failure to provide a safe environment for all students including Jessie Jr.

NBC 5 Chicago News highlighted this sad and horrible incident on Friday, November 2, 2018. Countless number of viewers have chimed in with their comments of disgust and sadness for what happened to Jessie Jr. But the Illinois Tort Immunity Act protects Chicago Public Schools and their Administrators. Making it harder for parents, just like Jessie Jr's Mom (LaJuanna Caldwell), to seek justice and safety for her son.

Please help me bring awareness to this very sad incident and to hold Arthur Ashe Elementary School and Chicago Board of Education responsible for gross negligence, the intent to conceal injury-related incidents from parents/guardians and the act of recklessness which ultimately resulted in 6 year-old Jessie Jr needing required surgery to his penis. This young child does not deserve to start his young life this way. No child does.
