On Thursday, August 3rd, at 8:00 AM, friends, family and small business owners and their supporters will converge on MTA headquarters (2 Broadway, New York, NY) in lower Manhattan to challenge a process that could displace a 51-year-old woman-owned and founded family business and local institution.
Founded by a blind woman in the small Westchester village of Croton-on-Hudson, this small coffee/newspaper shop inside the town’s train station, has become a talisman for the tens of thousands of people who commute and pass through its byways each year; millions have bought a morning cup of coffee or a newspaper in the half century since Nance’s began meeting the needs of travelers, commuters and those simply out of luck needing a helping hand.
Our nation is built on the tenacity and commitment of small business owners, family businesses and the communities who support them. This third generation business, meeting the needs of a small Hudson River neighborhood for over half a century should be given every opportunity to stay in place and continue its role as a touchstone for those running to catch the morning commuter train or catching AMTRAK to places unknown.
“We are going to push back against these giant organizations aiming to force small businesses out and replace us with cookie cutter chains and franchises. We are a part of this town, we are members of the local organizations, we are supporters of local charities, we know the names of the children of those we see each and every morning of their working lives. Like our neighbors and friends who support us, we are a part of what makes our community and communities like ours special and unique” said Sean Cohen, grandson of Nance’s founder.
Join Sean and his family on August 3rd, 8:00 AM, at MTA headquarters (2 Broadway, New York, NY) They will be on the 5:50 train out of Beacon, that leaves Croton-Harmon at 6:28. We will be towards the front of the train. We will have bagels and snacks for our supporters. We are only looking for POSITIVE MESSAGES to be on any signs made.
