Stop the Gondola to Dodger Stadium. Protect our neighborhoods and our parks.

Stop the Gondola to Dodger Stadium. Protect our neighborhoods and our parks.
The Issue
Aerial Rapid Transit Technology (ARTT) LLC, a private corporation founded by the McCourt family, is proposing to build an aerial gondola system between Union Station and Dodger Stadium called LA ART. Although Metro is helping ARTT obtain approvals for this gondola project, this would be a PRIVATE corporation’s project built mostly over PUBLIC land.
We, the signers of this petition, OPPOSE the LA ART Gondola to Dodger Stadium for the following reasons:
- THIS IS A TOURIST ATTRACTION, NOT REAL TRANSIT. At up to $30 per ticket for a 1.5 mile ride, this project is not transit that local community members would use to access essential services.
- ARTT LLC AND METRO ARE SEEKING APPROVALS WITHOUT MEANINGFUL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND TRANSPARENCY. A project that would permanently alter our neighborhoods and the Los Angeles State Historic Park requires a full public review. Basic information has been withheld until very late in the process, including the location of towers, and the height and scale of the stations. The two potential routes were chosen without public input.
- THIS PROJECT WOULD HARM OUR NEIGHBORHOODS. Residents would experience an invasion of privacy. The large 40-person cabins would travel less than 40 feet above homes. The gondola stations would increase traffic and parking problems, and endanger pedestrians, especially seniors.
- THIS PROJECT WOULD HARM THE HISTORIC RESOURCES AND CHARACTER OF EL PUEBLO, THE BIRTHPLACE OF LOS ANGELES. The station design is out of place in El Pueblo. The proposed stairway to access the station would extend into El Pueblo State Park and destroy a portion of the historic walkway. Excavation for pylons could threaten sections of the Zanja Madre.
- THIS PROJECT WOULD ALTER THE CHARACTER AND USE OF THE LOS ANGELES STATE HISTORIC PARK. This gondola would commercialize the park and give it a Disneyland-like feel. Activities such as kite flying, concerts, and festivals would be impacted.
- THIS PROJECT WOULD USE PUBLIC RESOURCES FOR PRIVATE BENEFIT. Park visitors on foot currently enjoy open-sky and Downtown LA views. If this project is built, those views for park visitors would be obstructed by cables and gondola cars, so that a private company could provide unobstructed views to their paying customers. This project would also occupy public land and public right of ways without providing real public benefit.
- WITH SO MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS, TAXPAYERS COULD END UP PAYING FOR THIS ILL-CONCEIVED PROJECT. What will it cost to obtain the public right of ways? What will it cost to operate and maintain the system? Who will make sure that it runs safely and efficiently? This is in addition to ARTT LLC not answering basic questions about the towers and stations.
- THERE ARE BETTER ALTERNATIVES. The Dodger Stadium Express bus program could be expanded and use electric buses stationed at several parking lots in Chinatown.
- THIS IS A SHAMEFUL ATTACK ON ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE. ARTT LLC should not be allowed to invade neighborhoods and exploit a park that Chinatown activists fought for years to get built. Our communities must be respected, and our public spaces valued.
Metro, Mayor Garcetti, Governor Newsom, City and State Leaders:
- Stop the corporate welfare for developers and the privatization of our public spaces.
- Demand an open, equitable, and transparent review process.
- Protect our neighborhoods, El Pueblo, and the Los Angeles State Historic Park.
- Focus on real transit that serves our communities, not this tourist attraction.
- STOP THE GONDOLA TO DODGER STADIUM !!!
