Today I emailed Merriam-Webster using the 'Contact Us' form on their website to update them on the petition. I hope to get a response of some kind but I fear this email may be met with the same silence they have continued to show on Twitter regarding adding these words. I will keep you all updated and let you know immediately if I get a response and what that response is! Thank you for your support and please continue to share the petition so that it can gain more signatures. The more of us speaking out the more likely they will pay attention. -Sarah Elkins The following is a copy of the email I sent: "In February of 2017, I and some others on Twitter asked Merriam-Webster if you could add asexual as a sexual orientation, aromantic, and agender to the dictionary. We were met with some reluctance by whoever runs the Merriam-Webster Twitter account and told that we needed to give examples of the words being used 'meaningfully.' When numerous examples were given we didn't hear much back from Merriam-Webster other than that we should keep an eye out on future updates to the dictionary. This made us hopeful that the words would be added later in the year. When the new list of words came out and none of these three were on the list I created a petition to gather signatures for them to be added to the dictionary. At present the petition on Change.org has 4349 signatures as well as numerous testimonials and comments from people who identify as asexual, aromantic, or agender about why it is important to include these words in the dictionary. https://www.change.org/p/merriam-webster-merriam-webster-to-add-asexual-as-an-orientation-aromantic-and-agender-to-the-dictionary Please, please add these words to the dictionary! It will help so many people if you do so. -Sarah "Neila" Elkins"
