Save the De Soto prairie!

The Issue

The environment has always been a very big deal to me and my family. I go to a summer camp every year in the Flint Hills, and that is what started my passion for saving the prairie as only 1% of the Tallgrass Prairie is left. As I started high school, I began to realize that I wanted to go into a career focused on conservation and biology. Because of this, my family decided to convert our yard to native prairie to create a habitat for local butterflies, bees, and other species. Sadly, my neighbors are trying to get it removed because it “looks ugly.” They don’t see the amazingly positive impact this would have for the neighborhood.

Creating a prairie like this takes 4 years for it to fully develop. We are on year 2. We strongly believe in this project and have put a ton of effort into maintaining the plot of land. We would love for this unique project to continue! Signing this petition would get us one step closer to being able to keep our prairie! This topic will also be voted on at the De Soto City Council meeting on Thursday, September 17 at 7pm. If you can make it that would be awesome! They also offer a Zoom option if you are more comfortable with that. Thank you guys so much for your support! Save the prairie!
