Here's what Nate has to say about the event: “Join me on Facebook LIVE this Wednesday at 8:00pm ET and have your questions answered about Bill C-246, the Modernizing Animal Protections Act. All Canadians are welcome! Bill C-246 aims to do three things: 1) modernize the Criminal Code's animal cruelty provisions; 2) ban the importation of shark fins; and 3) strengthen fur labeling laws and ban the importation/sale of cat and dog fur. I have recently proposed amendments to the bill to address concerns raised by my rural colleagues, and agricultural, hunting, and angling sector groups. Specifically, animal cruelty provisions would return to the "Property" section within the Criminal Code, and the new offence of "brutal and vicious killing" would be deleted. With these amendments, the bill has a much better chance of success. In proposing these new changes, I have worked closely with the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies and SPCAs across the country to make sure that protections are maintained in the bill against the sexual abuse of animals, animal fighting, and to improve prosecutions against severe neglect cases.
