Wednesday 22nd April
This morning 110 MPs and Peers across seven parties and four nations signed a joint statement calling on the Chancellor to introduce a Recovery Universal Basic Income in response to the coronavirus crisis.
Help us show the Government that there’s public support for basic income to match.

As it stands the Government's support schemes are not equipped to see us through. Over the last weeks we’ve seen the gaps that have left too many people and families struggling.
Millions lost their jobs before the furlough scheme could save their livelihoods. Millions more are excluded from the support measures altogether. For others it’s impossible to survive on the relief they’ve been promised, as Universal Credit fails to stack up to everyday bills.
The level of economic uncertainty we now face will loom large for months, if not years, to come.
The truth is we don’t know when regular life will resume.
But we do know that the tools of today are not fit to safeguard an entire country’s wellbeing during this period of unprecedented, universal uncertainty.
That’s why a Universal Basic Income (UBI) must form a crucial part of the Government’s recovery plan.
UBI is an unconditional regular cash payment made to everyone. It’s the quickest and most effective way to give us all the security we need to rebuild our lives and jumpstart our economy.
Imagine what more financial security could do for you or the people you know.
It could give you the freedom to make the best decisions for yourself, your family or business. Or keep the roof over your head as you look for a new job or train in a new skill in the aftermath of COVID-19.
A Recovery UBI would lift up everyone in these trying times. It’s one piece of the puzzle that can give our country the collective strength to bounce back – and ensure basic dignity for all in the process.

In a short time, Universal Basic Income has moved from progressive idea to essential measure.
It’s a policy that can respond to the enormity and urgency of this moment – and make us more resilient to the financial, climate and health shocks we know will come knocking again.
