Medium, respect your writers: We demand fair compensation

El problema

It’s time for a change—a change for a better Medium.

Medium’s writers are the platform’s backbone. Without us, there is no Medium.

Nor is there Medium without its readers. It’s interesting, isn’t it?

Every writer is also a pure reader.

Because in the end, we are neither just writers nor just readers—we are human. And writing takes time, dedication, and effort. Yet, the current compensation doesn’t even cover the basic costs of an internet connection.

Previously, the earnings per read (EPR) ranged from $0.05 to $2, depending on reader engagement. However, between November and December 2024, Medium slashed the EPR to a maximum of $0.02. This means that a writer who used to earn $1,000 per month now struggles to make even $300.

Expanding the Medium Partner Program to 77 new countries without first ensuring its sustainability was a reckless decision. A single change can impact the entire community.

Despite Medium’s claims—stated by its CEO, Tony Stubblebine—that writers are still being paid at previous rates, the reality tells a different story. Writers now earn up to seven times less than they did in January 2024.

Writers are the foundation of Medium.

Without us, there is no platform. Yet, Medium has decided to reduce our compensation while profiting from our work.
I have attached two screenshots comparing past and present earnings, and any writer on this platform can confirm these facts. This is not just opinion—it is a reality we are all suffering from.

Without fair pay, creativity dies. Without writers, Medium is nothing.

Now- February

And 2024

If you are on Medium and have been affected, please consider signing this petition and creating your own.

We are many writers, but as a community, we are one.

This is how we can apply positive pressure and make Medium take our demands seriously.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Francisco Iglesias
