La causa

MT7902 is a wifi/BT card mainly used by Asus and HP, but also by Lenovo, in laptop models costing +800 dollars.

MT7902 was released in 2022 , yet as of August 2024, there is not a single line of code from MediaTek to provide a Linux driver.

MediaTek should either work on the code or open the driver of Windows so that the Linux community can take care of it themselves.

The lack of action on this matter will eventually end up on having a reverse engineered driver, which will also impact MediaTek’s image negatively.

Currently, stats indicate that Linux desktop/laptop users represent 4.5% of total computer users, just a bit below Apple.

Reading Reddit and forums I also learned that MediaTek does not even reply to emails indicating whether they are working on a driver or not. Therefore, people are left in a situation where they cannot make an informed decision over whether to install an Intel wifi card (and in some cases have their warranty affected) or wait and use a USB dongle instead. Send a email to MediaTek to ask for a driver:
