We just passed the 700-signature mark. Thank you for signing! We see and appreciate every signature and comment!
Some important updates:
1. Canadian Mennonite has written an article about our experiences. See it at https://tinyurl.com/stopmccabuse-article The editor, Will Braun, interviewed each of the seven signatories of the open letter as well as several Mennonite leaders, including our pastor Calixte Bananzaro from Burkina Faso, and former MCC leaders who express their concern about MCC’s treatment of its workers.
Go read it, share it, and please, make a comment! If you don’t know what to say, take the comment you made in the petition and add it to the CM article comments. That way, the public can more easily have access to all the powerful thoughts you have shared. Let’s make this a rich conversation on the CM website. Some comments might even appear in print in an upcoming issue.
2. Anabaptist World has also written an article. Although it’s based on the Canadian Mennonite article, it includes more information about the open letter and petition and our allegations of abuse. See it at https://anabaptistworld.org/former-mcc-workers-allege-abuses/ (No comments possible here.)
3. We want to offer some explanation about the stopmccabuse@proton.me email. You can reach out to this email confidentially to share a story about any kind of abuse you have experienced with MCC (not necessarily limited to abusive employment practices such as being fired or pressured to resign, bullied or harassed). We will do our best to respond as soon as possible. You remain in control of your story; we will not share it without your permission. This address is monitored by a few members of our group of survivors.
Please remember that the Speak Up Service that MCC keeps promoting does not seem to be a safe way for workers to express grievances or report about misconduct. One of the signatories of our open letter was fired shortly after they used the Speak Up service to report on an abuse of power by their supervisors, in the presence of one of the same MCC HR staff who had conducted the investigation into their complaints.
4. Current MCC staff, please remember that you can sign with a pseudonym for your protection, and we will remove the country/city information if that seems necessary to keep your identity secret.
5. Finally – don’t forget to share the petition with your friends and family by e-mail, social media, word of mouth, or even by printing out the QR code and hanging it up somewhere. If everyone gathers a few more signatures, we’ll soon surpass 1000!
MCC needs to stop hurting its workers and partners, and it needs to answer the questions in the petition publicly, directly, and without delay or prevarication. We are not giving up, and we are not going away, until this happens. #stopmccabuse
