Save Oktoberfest

The Issue

We want to attend the Oktoberfest 2017 festival that is reportedly applying for permission to be held at the One Utama shopping complex in Petaling Jaya.

PAS is opposing the event, claiming that such festivals are against the Malaysian way of life. PAS does not speak for us. They should not be preventing us from attending the event by calling for a ban.

We are Malaysians and we believe that Oktoberfest is very much in line with our celebratory culture of food and drink. In fact, Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia's official opening was officiated by then-Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.

Our founding fathers clearly understood the importance of diversity and unity.

If anyone does not wish to go for Oktoberfest, they are free to stay home.

Protecting personal freedoms means citizens should be free to make their own decisions about what events to attend or what food/ drink to consume without State intervention. Just because we don't like to eat fast food, for example, does not mean that the government should ban a public event with burgers.

If the local authority prohibits the Oktoberfest festival to appease religious fundamentalists, we will not hesitate to vote against your party/ coalition in the 14th general elections.

We will not allow extremism to poison our neighbourhood and country.
