Here is a video from the Downtown Bellingham Partnership where the mayoral candidates respond to several questions including one about public broadband at about 45:42 in the video. Garrett, Pinky, April and Seth all come out in support of it in different ways. April does seem to be the weakest, committing only to a "short term" committee when what we need is a long term tech committee that can direct public works. Still, it's a step in the right direction. The "evaluation" Seth mentions the city needs to complete, is the one public works has been intentionally dragging its feet on for 3 years. I have contacted him to let him know. So yes, if the Port can do their evaluation over a larger area in about a year than there is no excuse for the city to be taking this long with theirs. The last spreadsheet, note not map, they gave me about existing fiber marks many of the connections as (UNK) or unknown. Talk about a security risk. Not only does the city NOT know where a lot of the existing fiber is. They don't even know what a huge portion of it is doing. Time for some changes down at the public works office.
