At a certain point in history it makes sense to take highly valuable, or even critical services, and take them out of the private realm and make them public. This helps guarantee that everyone will receive basic services regardless of their wealthy, connections, or position in society. Here is a short list of public services that we rely on everyday. Most used to be private. 1. Fire Services -- This was private until it became clear that saving one house that had paid a high private fee, while the one next to it burned down because they didn't pay their fee, was unwise. 2. Fire Based Emergency Medical Services -- http://www.emsworld.com/article/10320648/editorial-fire-vs-private-ems This is a link to an article showing Fire Based Public EMS vs. Private EMS. 3. Water -- Mostly. 4. Police 5. Schools -- Mostly. Public Schools are under a lot of fire lately, most of it BS, but overall they have helped to civilize our country. by they way, educating your population has a 7 to 1 return financially. 6. GPS 7. DARPA Net (The Backbone of the Modern Internet) 8. Broadband (In over 450 communities in the US) 9. Roads -- Could you imagine the horror of swapping public roads for private, pay as you go turnpikes, etc. Good luck getting anywhere.
