As we wait for news from the COB on their research, etc. I wanted to share this article with all of you from our friendly neighbors to the north. The Canadians have not only declared that "high speed internet is essential for quality of life" they are setting a minimum speed of 50 Mbps down and 10 Mpbs up minimum for all citizens to have access to. Compare it to the low-income plans from Comcast and Century-Link in Bellingham. Comcast is $60 a month for only 25 Mbps down and nothing stated up (probably 10 Mbps). CL is offering speeds of 1.5 Mbps for $9.95 a month, which is disturbingly slow and inadequate. These speeds are not guaranteed either. Sure, if you live in a wealthy neighborhood you might get access to PRISM soon, but then you probably don't need a low-income connection. Also, you probably only effectively have access to one provider depending on where you live in Bellingham/Whatcom County. Again, Public Fiber can address all of these social issues, help us address our economic issues, and also give you better service overall. It can also be expanded exponentially as our needs grow.
