Hello again everyone :). I wanted to share the link to an article about Santa Monica, CA and CityNet. This city built its own Publicly Owned Fiber Optic Network, without raising taxes, and by managing their funds well. There are many similarities between this build and how Bellingham should approach building our own network. Santa Monica did such a good job, that their network pays for its own expansion partially by saving them the money they were spending to lease expensive privately owned fiber and conduit in the past. Add to that the the higher property values, high-tech companies, and good jobs that come along with having proper infrastructure. If you were a business, would you move to a community without proper infrastructure or a very high cost of operation if you could go somewhere else where those things were cheaper and better? Like, say Mount Vernon, or many of the over 450 other communities that have already done this? Remember, Mount Vernon is only about 30 minutes away. If we don't start doing this soon, we're going to miss our opportunity to attract new industry to Bellingham and address our perpetual underemployment and unemployment issues.
