Petition updateBellingham/Whatcom County Publicly Owned Fiber Optic NetworkThe San Juan Islands Rocket Ahead With Fiber, While Bellingham Waits

Here is an article outlining the developments with Fiber in the San Juan Islands. The cost of connection for the family I was staying with was about $300, which is less than the article states. The article is a bit old. The cost of connection goes down as the infrastructure is built and distribution nodes are installed. Remember, that Comcast and CenturyLink charge you to hookup too if there is no existing cable. It's just that most homes had copper cable or telephone run to them at some point. I would love to see more providers in the San Juans too, but overall they have way better connections, with more choice than Bellingham. So the costs may seem high in this article, but again, we need to remember that they will go down as this is installed. We've had fiber available to install since the 80's. At this point it should be the basic standard for broadband internet in the US not the "platinum" one. Thanks again for your support. You're all awesome :).
