Last week we announced our “We Deserve Better” alliance with The Oakland Compassion Project and Urban Park Cleanup.  This alliance was formed primarily to demand and encourage the City to implement it’s Encampment Management Policy that has been largely ignored.  The City has made many promises, and in typical fashion has not delivered. 

The results have been disastrous, as can be seen in our Writ of Mandamus, filed in Alameda Superior Court in August 2021 requesting a judge step in and force the City to action. One alarming statistic discovered was that Oakland only services 40 out of more than 200 encampments that have been identified by the City. These services have been implemented in an “arbitrary and capricious” manner, meaning that there is no rhyme or reason to who gets what services and when, adversely affecting the lives of our unhoused neighbors who are in dire need of support.
