MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Mobile Airport Authority’s board will get an update Wednesday about a new passenger terminal at the downtown airport at Mobile Aeroplex and Brookley.

What the board will hear is that plans to move the airport from its current location on Airport Boulevard in west Mobile are on track, said Airport Authority Executive Director Chris Curry.

“The relocation is going very well,” he told FOX10 News. “We’re scheduled to open the new terminal November of 2025 with a new parking garage, as well. So that project remains on schedule.”

Curry said preliminary work toward of a new five-gate terminal already is under way. He said the design work is about 50 percent complete and that construction on the building should start by the end of the year. The project, including the parking garage, will cost about $350 million.

The new airport – which will be dubbed Mobile International Airport – is an effort to attract more fliers from Baldwin County, who often opt for Pensacola International Airport. One airline, Avelo Airlines, operates from a temporary terminal at the downtown airport. It flies once a week to Orlando.

Curry said the other airlines will follow.

“Recruiting Airlines is nonstop for us,” he said. “So we’ll continue to recruit other carriers that do not have a presence in Mobile. We do not expect the legacy carriers, American, Delta, United, to move until the new terminal is complete.”
