Support Barbara Carney in continuing to save lives and help her community!
The Issue
A Newark, New Jersey resident has been helping the community for years by getting unwanted cats off the streets and off of peoples properties and doing TNVR to reduce the feral cat population. As a part of successful TNR there’s colony management (caretaking- providing food and shelter). This ordinance has been adopted in many cities and towns across the state and nation and has been a proven humane SOLUTION to the cat overpopulation caused by irresponsible pet ownership.
Barbara Carney and her friends, through the help of private donors and nonprofit rescues, have been able to get many cats spayed and neutered and off the streets of Newark (among other cities) for FREE. She has used her rented house to temporarily house these cats pre and post surgery for the recovery period. She also temporarily and properly crated the abandoned pets while she searched for rescue placement to take them and get them adopted. This containment keeps from spreading sicknesses between animals and avoids property damage. These animals were properly cared for. Her house and their cages were kept clean.
She was ordered to CEASE by the Newark Housing Authority two weeks ago and is continuing to be flooded with calls for help with cats from many Newark residents who she regretfully has to decline her services to as a result of this order to cease. Her own backyard colony is growing again as more abandoned pets are being tossed outside and she can no longer manage this (quickly trap and vet and seek rescue placement) like she used to.
Please stand behind her/them in asking the Mayor of Newark to do the responsible thing and ensure that she and her team can continue to help residents and clean his streets (reduce the cat population) in Newark. Ask him to recognize their efforts and that they are the solution not the problem. Ask him to adopt the TNVR program like other cities and towns in New Jersey.
Ask the Mayor to put a stop to the threats of eviction and harassment from the Housing Aurhority. And ask our two Senators Cory Booker and Bob Menendez to stand behind her work by contacting their colleagues in New Jersey to figure out how she can continue to get these cats off the streets and stop the ferals from multiplying so everyone wins!
