We now have over 3,500 signatures online and 1,000 from street stalls. Thank you. We are getting very close to 5,000 (enough to call a debate at Cornwall Council). Please when you read this GET ONE FRIEND to sign. Do it today!!

Council Leader Linda Taylor, who wants to be the Million Pound Mayor of Cornwall, was Mayor of St Ives once. See photo. But that was a ceremonial role, with nothing even vaguely like the powers a Mayor of Cornwall would have. Did you know that if we end up with a Mayor running the whole of Cornwall…

@ They could be elected next year for a SIX YEAR term

@ They can’t be removed by councillors whatever they do/however they perform or behave

@ They are not a councillor. They have their own budget, their own staff (at least 10) and will be paid about £80,000 a year (double what Linda Taylor gets now)

@ There is a plan to give them a special “Mayor’s Development Company”. Seriously!

@ They would be elected under the ‘first past the post’ system (no second preference). So they could easily win the power to rule Cornwall for six years even if two thirds of voters voted against them, for other candidates. A supreme ruler the people didn’t choose. All the winner needs is to get more votes than the person who comes second. In previous urban mayor elections voters got a second choice so the winners were the legitimate choice of voters. This won’t apply in Cornwall. The Mayor of Cornwall could easily be seen as lacking legitimacy from Day One…

We MUST demand a referendum before we end up with a system like this. Having a Mayor system that changes how Cornwall is run should be the people’s decision. Not a decision by 44 councillors in a meeting at County Hall!

BE DEMOCRATIC! That’s our messsge to Cornwall Council…
