On this Independence Day we celebrate our Nations birthday and the freedom that comes with it. I need you to save the date of July 9th to fight for St Augustine. On Monday July 9th at 5 pm in city hall (75 King St) there will be a presentation to the city commission regarding the contextualization of our confederate war memorial. I have attended all with the exception of the first and last meeting. I spoke at nearly all of those meeting giving input that was always ignored. The contextualization committee has finished their task. Words like "reassertion of white supremacy" and "The obelisk honors local loved ones who gave up their lives in service of the Confederate states. Yet in all these Confederate state constitutions, black people were legally regarded as human property. This memorial is a reminder of the diverse legacies of the Civil War."
These words if approved will lessen the true meaning of this memorial. Many of the family names that are listed on this memorial still reside in St Augustine. We must show up to this meeting to speak against the disrespect and memory of those late St Augustine residents who gave their lives for a city that would only disgrace their memory some 140 years later. If you can not make the meeting, please write a letter and email the commissioners explaining why this kind of contextualization is wrong. http://www.citystaug.com/government/city_commission/index.php
