Though we have won this battle, we must be vigilant. Those that are attacking our history believe it is not worthy of being honored, and so, any 'interpretive plaque ' or 'contextualization" must not humiliate or dishonor our families, our history and our veterans. Ron Rawls is not going to go away so fast, nor are those who came in from out of town to push his agenda. Also, we have another issue of concern. our own Edmund Kirby-Smith is being attacked AGAIN in Tallahassee. US Congresswoman (from South Florida) Debbie Wasserman Schultz is demanding that he must be removed from the Capital in Washington, DC because his being there is disgraceful. The bill that would take down Kirby-Smith in Washington, like they want to do with your memorials her, has gotten some traction. Please reach out to our State lawmakers and tell them we don't want Kirby-Smith removed any more than we want our memorials in St. Augustine removed. Tell them to reject House Bill 139 and SCR 184 While you have them on the phone, let them know that you are in favor of a State-Wide Veterans Memorial Protection Act that would elevate these war memorials, and protect them not only from the horriffic vandalism we have seen, but also protect them from removal.
