Glenwood Gridlock: Limit Hi-Rise Glenwood Place

The Issue

Citizens of Raleigh, North Carolina, concerned about the steadily increasing traffic on the Glenwood Avenue/US 70 artery, ask the Raleigh City Council to uphold the new Unified Development Ordinance with respect to the proposed Glenwood Place development.

Under the UDO, the height of buildings in the proposed Glenwood Place would be limited, some buildings could be 5 stories, others could be 7.

1. The developer’s proposals include three buildings over 10 stories, up to 800 apartments, commercial and retail space, with parking facilities. There is a concern that the impact on Glenwood Avenue traffic may be greater than the zoning application projects. Common sense suggests that the traffic coming and going from this development will create Gridlock on Glenwood, impacting our neighborhoods as well as other local users of this major thoroughfare.

2. This property is essentially a cul-de-sac, ill-suited by location and access for hi-rise, intensive development. There are no good alternatives for ingress/egress other than directly onto Glenwood Avenue.

There is no compelling reason to modify the UDO. Development that exceeds the limitations delineated in the UDO is unnecessary and shortsighted.

Our City will benefit from controlled development that respects our neighborhoods and the future quality of life for our citizens. We petition the City Council to let the UDO stand without exception and limit the height of buildings in the proposed Glenwood Place.
