Negligence of New Orleans Political Leaders

The Issue

The people of the city of New Orleans have come together to outline items that need your attention. Specifically in reference to the millennial generation, there are things that affect us that we have no control over due to systematic decision making working in opposition to the efficacy of those who live in the city; your constituents.

As the founder of the Mobilizing Millennials movement, it does my heart well to know that that our mission is being fulfilled in part which is to “promote civic and political literacy… and construct an agenda in alignment with the goals, values, and needs of a progressive people”. While what is outlined needs to be addressed, please do not limit the other needs that may not have been recorded via our questionnaire. Please direct your attention to the following areas: accessibility to equitable education for New Orleans youth, defunding and demilitarizing the New Orleans Police Department, accurate accountability for police misconduct, protections and resource allocation for the LGBT+ community, socially responsible gun control laws, healthcare, livable wages, abolition of private prisons, voter protections, restoring a felon’s right to vote, economic disparities due to the harmful effects of gentrification, and dissolving the homelessness rate. While some items mentioned above you may not have direct control over, your certainly have influence. Please use it.

Mayor Cantrell, since May 25, 2020, America has been responsive and reactionary to the indent practices of police officers, more specifically, their murdering of black men. Over the past couple of weeks, there have been marches and protests all over the city and many of them have been soundly present in front of New Orleans City Hall. I have personally been a proactive participant of assembling, to call out intersectional injustices that lawmakers seem not to be responsive to. It disheartens myself, and many of the citizens of New Orleans that you have not been a present voice in the midst of the cries of your people. Aside from social media activity, people are looking for a present stance and true change to be effected. While you have done great things for this city as a historic mayor, there are items that need your attention as well as that of the New Orleans City Council, the New Orleans Police Department, and the New Orleans Sheriff’s Office.

It is my earnest hope that we are able to meet us at the exchange table to discuss primary strategies to bring about effective change for a better New Orleans.
