Demand Suicide Prevention talks in North Olmsted City Schools
The Issue
As an advocate for suicide prevention, I am disgusted by the students of North Olmsted High School's behavior. This past week (September 10, 2021) a fellow student from North Olmsted High School passed away due to suicide. I have only seen very few students show respect and take appropriate action. Many students have been "joking" about this student's suicide and not taking this unfortunate event seriously. Suicide is VERY REAL and not at all an excuse to skip out on a school-wide memorial or be spoken of in a casual manner. I would like the North Olmsted City School District to begin taking appropriate action before more of these events begin to occur. I would also like to see parents begin talking with their kids about the seriousness of suicide and how it can impact others. Many people treat the suicide conversation like it is sex talk, but suicide does not begin to compare. North Olmsted City Schools does not have a licensed mental health professional for the students to confide in. Although they may have guidance counselors, they are not equipped with the right training to discuss mental health with their students. I am extremely disappointed to see the amount of disrespect coming from the students at NOHS, and even more disgusted that the city council has not taken action. A family lost their child to this unfortunate action. No child should ever have to feel so alone that they feel the need to take their own life. I would like to see appropriate action taken from North Olmsted Township and the City Schools.
