Mayor Tory says petitions are not how you make public policy decisions.

“Facebook petitions are terrific but they are not the way you make public policy decisions or decisions like this.” Mayor Tory, referring to a petition to rename a Toronto street named after Henry Dundas who fought the abolition of slavery.

Well petitions are one form of advocacy when politicians make lousy public policy decisions. In this case Mayor Tory and City Council refused to declare homelessness an emergency.

The facts in the original petition speak for themselves.

Conditions are worse since it was launched. Homeless people were not adequately protected from COVID-19 and a legal coalition had to take the city to court. Yesterday the names of nine individuals were added to the Toronto Homeless memorial. Four of them had died of COVID-19.

I say make this petition grow.
