Legislation Update:
Thank you all for your contacting me and expressing your concerns about Ajax and Officer Hickey. We are currently drafting legislation that will address the auction of police dogs by allowing political subdivisions to give retiring police officers first claim to the police dogs they have served with. We understand the strength of the bonds formed between the handler and the dog; they become part of the officer’s family, and we want to be respectful of that relationship. The bill will also include police horses in the provision because they are treated the same as police dogs in the Ohio Revised Code and are just as important.
Since this issue with Ajax has happened so close to the shooting of Jethro in Stark County, it is apparent that the safety of these animals needs to be addressed. Therefore, the bill will also match state law to the penalties established in federal law for killing a police dog or horse. We care deeply about these public servants and want to protect them accordingly.
Thank-you ALL for your support!!!
