This morning, WISH TV reported that the federal grant to build the Red Line on hold. According to the WISH TV report, Indianapolis is supposed to get a $75 million federal grant to build the first phase of the Red Line, connecting Broad Ripple to the University of Indianapolis. The report states, "It’s not clear when that money will become available, because Congress did not pass a 2017 budget. Instead, Congress passed a resolution to keep the government funded through April." The report further notes, "The resolution does not allow for new spending. Until there’s a new budget passed, IndyGo said the Red Line and 30 other projects nationwide will be waiting for federal funding." Interesting, the report suggests that IndyGo is still preparing to build the rapid transit line. Construction is scheduled to start in June. According to a statement issued by IndyGo spokesman Bryan Luellen, "The project is still on schedule and pre-construction work is underway. Outreach and stakeholder engagement continue as final construction documents are being prepared." CollegeAvenueIndy.org wonders where this City will find and extra $75 mil laying around. Coincidentally, CollegeAvenueIndy.org recalled a November 15, 2016 Fox 59 report wherein the Indianapolis City-County Council approved the mayor’s request to borrow $75 million for road funding, public safety, city infrastructure projects. Hmmm... there's that $75 million number again. Could it be that the City will divert some or all of those funds to IndyGo?
