Dear Friends First of all I wish to thank you for your support for this and related petitions where we tried to voice our protest to those who claim an unbridled authority to rule over this city and over how its residents go about their lives. Unlike other levels of government the city government has no official opposition to check its actions and hold it accountable. As the city is facing substantially more serious crises than bike lanes, it is now time to decide if we are going to put up with more of the same or even worse, or take matters into our hands by influencing the outcome of the next election. As far as transportation is concerned, and as a member of the City Council has openly declared, we are facing the prospect of a city where cars will be banned. Back to the 19th century ! As I've tried to point out before, however, bike lanes are only the conspicuous symptom of a deeper malaise. It shows that delegated democracy is bankrupt. This goes for all levels of government across the country. It's time that the electorate actively participates in decisions. It's called participatory democracy, and simply means government by referendum ! I'd like to see Vancouver lead the country in participatory democracy. At this time of incredible technology that will soon show us pilotless passenger aircraft, digital technology has advanced to the stage where it is possible to easily conduct referendums through the convenience of our PC's and smart phones. Our neighbours in Washington state have been doing this for 50 years, and with paper ballots and boxes ! I therefore move that the establishment of a Referendum Office at City Hall be the first item on our agenda.
