PLEASE ATTEND THE ZONING MEETING NEXT TUESDAY JANUARY 10th 7:00 p.m. City Hall 222 east 9th Street, Lockport The importance of public attendance and support cannot be understated, we need to make our voices heard. It is important to truly understand the gravity of this destructive plan, that simply put, flies in the face of common sense. 2.1 million square feet is a hard number to grasp. It’s equivalent to dropping 14 Walmart stores in the middle of these 5 neighborhoods and the Big Run Wolf Ranch wildlife sanctuary. It is shocking to consider that scale, and hard to understand how something that size with parking for nearly 600 Semi trucks can be considered an acceptable option in the location proposed. It has been noted that much of this area was zoned in 1971. Zoned long before anything else was built here. Zoned before nearly 500 local families moved into homes and built their lives. 46-year-old zoning is also difficult to grasp. In 1971 the Vietnam War had not yet ended, it was before Watergate, it was before the World Trade Center or Sears Tower were built and The Ed Sullivan Show was still on TV. 46-year-old zoning isn't a reason, it’s a relic. It is the responsibility of the city to consider what impact these antiquated documents have on the hundreds of local families that reside here today. At the time this was zoned Lockport was less than half its current size and this area was a vacant field on the edge of town. Will we now allow this half century old document to devastate our communities? Will our city leaders shrug their shoulders and allow thousands of residents to suffer as their quality of life deteriorates among the Air, Light, and Sound Pollution? Will they stand by knowing the crushing financial loss that will be felt by hundreds of families who have worked hard their whole lives to own a home only to see its value plummet with a 45 foot concrete walls and the sound of hundreds of Semi Trucks outside their windows? Section 153.10.020 (C) of the Lockport Development Code: "Promote the growth of the City of Lockport in a manner that will not only provide its citizens with a safe, healthy and beneficent environment but also will protect property values" Is this safe? Is it Healthy? Is it promoting a Beneficent Environment? Is it protecting Property values? How can our city officials approve this truck terminal and not directly violate their own legal guidelines? Strong public representation at this zoning meeting is imperative. Our elected officials must see how opposition to this plan is growing with each passing day. Thank you all for your support.
