Dear San Mateo Ice Rink Supporter, We hope that you had a good summer. Sorry that we haven't been in touch but there have been few developments since the City Council voted unanimously against SPI Holdings' proposal to tear down the ice rink in exchange for a small payment to the City. We will keep you posted on next steps. In the meantime, attached is an article in today's paper about the City of San Mateo's interest in improving its recreational facilities. Ironically, there is no mention of the ice rink that has been locked up for the past three years. During this period, SPI has deprived San Mateo residents of the recreational benefit mandated by the Master Plan. The City has refused to enforce the Master Plan, allowing SPI to hold the city and its residents hostage until it gets what it wants. Please leave a comment at the comment at the bottom of the article, asking the City to enforce the existing Master Plan and get the San Mateo Ice Rink open ASAP, until a long-term solution can be agreed upon. Alternatively, the City should use the current recreational planning effort to identify an alternative site for an ice rink.
