We just had a small (but important) victory! The City of San Mateo has agreed to turn over public records relating to meetings and emails between the City and Dennis Wong, the head of SPI Holdings LLC. Previously, the City had refused to turn over details of these meetings and emails, claiming that it was in the public interest not to do so. With the help of our attorneys, however, we filed a California Public Records Act request, demanding that the City disclose all of its communications with Dennis Wong and SPI. Twice the City refused our requests, but inevitably our persistence paid off and the City released these records. Hopefully, this victory will ensure that the City is transparent in its future communications with the developer, enabling the public and press to keep things honest.
Attached is an article about our victory. Please leave a comment at the bottom of the San Mateo County Times article, thanking the paper and reporter Aaron Kinney for their excellent coverage and urging the City to continue to be transparent in its dealings.
Thanks so much to those of who have contributed to our legal defense fund. This is a great example of how legal expertise can help us level the playing field with SPI Holdings. If you haven't already, please donate here: https://www.tilt.com/campaigns/save-the-bridgepointe-ice-rink-in-san-mateo
