Dear Supporter of the San Mateo Ice Rink, SPI, the Bridgepointe Mall owner that unilaterally shut down the ice rink two years ago, was just caught lying to a local reporter. Adam Alberti, a PR spinmaster with high-priced Singer Associates in San Francisco, recently told a San Jose Mercury News Reporter that SPI was not responsible for the rink's closure over two years ago. Veteran Peninsula reporter Aaron Kinney knew the truth, however. In the attached article, Kinney deftly pointed out that SPI Executive Peter Meier wrote a letter in 2013 saying that SPI had no intention of keeping the rink operational and had been trying to get rid of the rink since acquiring the mall in 2005. This is yet another desperate attempt by SPI to tear down the rink by any means necessary. We hope that the City of San Mateo will not fall for this and call out any acts of bad faith by SPI. As San Mateo Planning Commissioner said last year, "I really think it was not a good faith gesture on the part of the applicant to start off by cutting the amenity." We hope that we can continue to count on your support, especially as the battle turns ugly!
