We Stand with AFD Firefighter Ben Schultz

The Issue

On June 5, 2017, Firefighter/Paramedic Ben Schultz began an exercise to continue his educational goal of becoming an Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) Engineer and uphold serving the People of the Municipality of Anchorage, AK (MOA). Unfortunately, that goal was put to a halt in a near fatal accident, falling approximately 100 feet off a ladder truck. He was transported to the hospital and immediately underwent emergency craniotomy surgery to relieve massive pressure on his brain. Ben spent over eight months in a rehabilitation facility where he learned to regain consciousness, mobility and independence. Three years later and despite Ben’s accident not allowing him to return to the line of duty at this time, he continues to wake up every working day and proudly serves the AFD and MOA in his current position in Administration, while actively working towards returning to the line.

As of November 1, 2021, Ben will be terminated from his administrative position, due to elective budget cuts for the MOA; and after 11 years of Ben serving the AFD and MOA, we are not ready to say goodbye! Please sign this petition to bring attention to an employee, who although disabled, is still doing everything in his power to get back to where he was at before this tragic accident and help continue his rehabilitation goals in serving us in the future.
