The Issue

Community Gardens provide socialization, promote physical activity, fight food scarcity, and encourage healthy diets.

The most accessible local gardens (for rent) are in Spring Lake Park. This is too far away to create a meaningful social and environmental impacts due to the driving distance alone. We are proposing to create a series of community gardens, within each ward that are free to enjoy, use, and contribute to as needed.

We also propose to create a compost station at each garden. This will enable local community members to repurpose their kitchen scraps, grass clippings, and other compostable material into reusable fertile soil each year.

Community gardens are also a rich educational resource. They can serve as an open classroom for local schools and youth groups. In this way, the next generation will learn about the benefits of growing and consuming locally. Many of the schools in town also have many acres of unused land that could serve as the location of these community gardens.

We believe in the healing power of community gardens in strengthening our local communities. We hope to count on your support!
