The Issue

Aloha,

I hope this message finds you well. I am reaching out on behalf of the Maui Off-Road Riders, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing opportunities for children, parents, and families to engage in safe and enjoyable off-road riding activities. Our mission is to secure a designated area where riders of all ages can gather to learn, socialize, and enjoy the outdoors together.

Despite our best efforts and the support of our community, we have encountered challenges in gaining the attention and support of local officials. While we have already collected 1950 signatures in support of our petition, it seems insufficient to persuade our officials to address our needs and concerns for the next generation of riders on Maui.

Our vision is simple yet powerful: to establish a designated riding area where families can come together to learn about safety, improve their riding techniques, and foster friendships within our community. This area would provide a safe and controlled environment for riders of all skill levels to enjoy, while also promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for our youth.

Unfortunately, past attempts to secure such a space have been met with obstacles and delays. Despite receiving support from the Trails and Access department of the DLNR Na Ala Hele division, we have encountered a lack of commitment and flexibility from individuals in various positions of authority. Previous petitions and requests for designated riding areas have gone unanswered, leaving our community without a suitable location to pursue our passion for off-road riding.

As a result, many riders are forced to engage in illegal riding activities in restricted areas, posing risks to both themselves and the environment. Without a designated space for off-road riding, our efforts to promote safety, camaraderie, and community engagement are severely limited.

We are not asking for a handout; rather, we seek support in securing a designated area where we can responsibly enjoy our sport and contribute positively to our community. With the dedication and resources of our organization and its members, we are prepared to take on the responsibility of maintaining and caring for this space, ensuring its sustainability for generations to come.

We believe that by providing a designated riding area for our community, we can create a safe and welcoming environment for families to come together, learn, and grow. We ask for your support in advocating for the establishment of such an area and in helping us to realize our vision for the future of off-road riding on Maui.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
