A recently recorded video shows a masked inmate at the Jessup Correctional Institute in Jessup, Maryland describing the unhealthy conditions of the facility as well as the inhumane treatment of the inmates now and even before the Covid-19 pandemic. The people in this facility are being denied basic human rights entitled to them by law. The guards in the facility have been ordered to stay out of inmate cells as much as possible however they are still doing random searches of inmate cells possibly exposing inmates and themselves to the coronavirus. Inmates are being denied the right to proper healthcare, a clean and healthy environment, and essential sanitation needs. There are 1,440 minutes in a single day. The inmates are being held in cells for 1,410 minutes a day. Could you imagine being locked in a cage for 1,410 minutes for over 90 days having minimal contact with your loved ones? Could you imagine being tested and testing positive for COVID 19 and not being allowed to update your loved ones? Could you imagine being the family member of one of these inmates or gaurds and having no clue what the current state is of your loved one or the facility they're being housed in?
In the state of Maryland approximately 24,000 inmates are housed in these facilities. Maryland spends about $1.07 BILLION a year on prisons mostly in tax payers dollars. Where is the money going if the people working and being kept here are still being forced to live and work under these extremely cruel and horrific conditions. Take a minute to remember these inmates are PEOPLE....HUMAN BEINGS...and they are sent to these correctional facilities for to do exactly that make corrections that will help them be better in society, not to be enslaved, and introduced to real savagery and cruelty. All I want to see is a place where ALL humans regardless of race, history, ethnicity etc. are respected and treated like our lives are worth something.
In a time where justice reform and the call for equality is at an all time high we must not sit back and do nothing about the inhumane treatment of the people in these facilities simply because they made mistakes in their past. WE HAVE NO RIGHT TO SIT BACK AND DO NOTHING!!They still deserve quality care and a stable CLEAN environment to rehabilitate in which is required by the state department of corrections and public safety. If you would like to do more to help PLEASE share this petition to help raise awareness to these issues and CALL THE WARDEN OF THE FACILITY at (410) 799-7610 and demand something be done about these conditions. You can also call Inmate Health Services (410) 585-3377 and demand someone go out to this facility to ensure these inmates are being given the proper care and a clean environment during and AFTER the pandemic. Its time for Change in the Maryland Prison System starting here.
