Why Idaho Ave. NW?

The Issue

The proposed Family Shelter on Idaho Avenue, NW DC is an inadequate location for the intended purpose of the project.

-Co-locating a 50 unit (approx 150 person) shelter with the Second District Police headquarters will impact core police functions, mission assurance, and the safety and welfare of residents and homeless.

-Stacked police parking, a mechanical system, has been suggested for the proposed site which will lengthen shift changes, produce 24/7 noise and add a significant cost to the overall proposal.

-The presence and proximity of fuel pumps (fumes), hazmat and emergency vehicles (sirens) located at the Second District headquarters will affect quality of life for homeless residents, especially children.

-Co-locating homeless families temporarily at a police station, in cubicle units with shared bathrooms and dorm meals, lengthy commutes on public transportation to access schools, services and job training afford neither dignity or safety nor chances for successful outcomes.

-The mayor/council plan to take current funds from schools, transportation, security and other critical accounts, despite already owning many empty schools, buildings as well as public land and community centers where multi-use housing and services can be provided at significantly lower cost, without violating zoning and other requirements.

-John Eaton is already oversubscribed and underfunded.  Rotating in hundreds of temporary revolving students will affect standards, costs and facilities.
