Bring Miles Morales into the MCU
Bring Miles Morales into the MCU
The Issue
In 2002, after twenty years of efforts from various studios and directors, Sam Raimi brought Spider-Man to the big screen for the first time. In 2012, the film series was rebooted by Marc Webb, and we were given a second take on the character's origin story. This beloved character, a favorite of comic book fans and non-readers alike, has been given two very different takes on the big screen across five feature films in the last thirteen years. He has also been the focus of eight animated series, a live-action television series, a Broadway musical, and thirty-seven video games.
In 2011, Brian Michael Bendis introduced a new Spider-Man in the Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series. Miles Morales, a half-black half-Puerto Rican Brooklynite took over the role after the death of Peter Parker in that series. In the time since, Morales has quickly become a fan favorite, reinvigorating interest for old and new fans alike and making fans of color feel more welcome and represented by Marvel.
We, the undersigned, recognize that this is not the sort of issue that is necessarily changed by demand and is entirely at the discretion of the company producing the film. However, we would like to let Marvel know that while we love Peter Parker and the many iconic stories he has featured in across fifty-three years of comic books and other media, we want to see Miles' story told on the big screen as well. We find the idea of a third telling of Peter Parker's origin story and high school years to be a waste of storytelling potential and of an opportunity to represent other groups of people that have been missing from Marvel's brilliantly interconnected cinematic universe.
We respect and admire the actors currently being considered for the role of Peter Parker, but there are actors who we feel deserve a chance to bring this new and wonderful character to the masses in a way he has not had the chance to be yet. A Spider-Man film featuring Miles Morales, portrayed by an actor such as Alfred Enoch, Tyler James Williams, or myself (Stephen A. Ruiz aka Stevie McFly), would give audiences something fresh while creating new storytelling opportunities for the talented writers and directors in Marvel Studios' employ.
This is not a petition against Peter Parker or the actors being considered to play him. This is a petition for Miles Morales and the actors not being given a chance. Marvel, please consider the wishes of your fans to see this story told and to have a new icon for our generation.
