Subject: Petition for Increased Transparency and Ethical Oversight for Mark Carney's Potential Candidacy for Prime Minister

We, the undersigned citizens of Canada, express our deep concern regarding the potential candidacy of Mark Carney for the office of Prime Minister of Canada and the potential conflicts of interest that may arise from his previous leadership role at Brookfield Asset Management and other global financial institutions.

WHEREAS

Mark Carney has held influential positions in global financial institutions, including his role as Governor of the Bank of Canada and Governor of the Bank of England;
He has been involved with Brookfield Asset Management, which stands to benefit from Canadian taxpayer funds for major investments and projects;
There are concerns about the transparency of Mark Carney’s financial holdings and potential conflicts of interest if he were to assume the office of Prime Minister without fully disclosing these interests;
The absence of adequate safeguards or transparency regarding potential conflicts of interest between public office and private financial interests could undermine the integrity of Canada’s political system;
Voters deserve to have confidence that their elected officials are serving in the public interest, free from undue influence from private business and global financial elites.

WE THEREFORE CALL FOR:

Immediate and Full Disclosure:

We demand that Mark Carney fully disclose any and all financial ties, investments, or ongoing involvement with Brookfield Asset Management and other international financial institutions. This disclosure should include details regarding his holdings, potential financial interests, and any other affiliations that may constitute a conflict of interest if he were to assume the office of Prime Minister.

Stronger Conflict of Interest Legislation:

We call for an amendment to Canada’s Conflict of Interest Act to ensure stricter regulations regarding former executives from global financial institutions entering political office. These individuals should be subject to enhanced scrutiny and more transparent disclosure before assuming any role in government.

Establishment of Independent Oversight:

We request the creation of an independent oversight committee that will monitor the potential conflicts of interest of individuals seeking to hold office as Prime Minister. This committee should operate outside of political influence and ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability.

Immediate Review of Mark Carney’s Eligibility:

Prior to any political campaign or appointment as Prime Minister, we urge the Office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner to conduct a thorough investigation into whether Mark Carney’s past financial interests pose a conflict of interest with the duties of the Prime Minister’s office, and whether they could undermine the democratic integrity of the office.
