*UPDATED 12/4/21* Demand Action From Marist College on Recent Burglaries

The Issue

Recently, there have been multiple burglaries in Marist College housing areas. Students, primarily girls, had personal items and valuable goods taken from their dorms including electronics, underwear, cash, and food. Some of these break-ins occurred over the recent Thanksgiving break, which means students came back from pleasant weekends with their families to find their townhouse completely ransacked. The college has known these break-ins happen every year around Thanksgiving, since local criminals know that students aren’t in the residence halls. The college was aware of a break-in at the Foy Townhouses before break, but security was NOT increased over the Thanksgiving break period. Why is this continuing to happen? We need to hold Marist College accountable for these thefts. The safety of students should come before all else, and Marist needs to invest in our safety. Please sign this petition, which will be sent to the dean and Marist Security to show them that students and their families are disgusted by their poor safety and security procedures. We are concerned about our safety and our houses, especially since Christmas break is coming up. We don’t just want more increased patrols, we want more guards stationed on campus, even when students are not in the residence halls. We need more updated security systems and better lighting, especially in parking lots, along with night vision cameras. These changes would not be expensive to implement and would make life safer for all students. Do not be silent on this issue. We need to demand more safety procedures on campus!
