MUST acquires 1280 Field Pkwy warehouse, info on Variance, 180 signers

Concerned residents on Bells Ferry, Turner and White Circle
Aug 23, 2017
MUST buys 1280 Field Pkwy (warehouse on 1.68 ac) from Cobb EMC for $1,394,000.00 and Cobb EMC provided owner financing. The sale took place on eclipse day. So this MUST plan is moving ahead. Be sure to turn out for the August 28 6:00 pm BZA meeting at City Hall, 205 Lawrence St. Marietta 30060. Please ask your friends and neighbors to sign the Change petition. Some information on Variance and local government contacts: V-2017-22 will be heard first. The Variance permits applicants and opposition 15 minutes per side, total. This does not give much time to many people who are concerned, to address the BZA. To be fair, each neighborhood should choose a spokesperson and limit comment to 3 minutes to allow 4 neighborhoods to speak. Good turnout is important and civil, adult behavior is key to impressing the BZA. No signs, applause, booing, clapping or otherwise animated behavior is allowed. Your email and signature on the petition is noticed. BZA members have noticed 180 signers and comments – lets get to 200! Jurisdiction: Hamilton Grove, Briarfield, Cottages and Summit Village, you live in Marietta City limits and your Councilman is Andy Morris, Ward 4. He just qualified for another term and has no challengers. Your Board of Zoning Appeals appointee is David Hunter. Your Mayor is Steve Tumlin. If you live in Huntington Woods on the east side of Turner Rd you are in Unincorporated Cobb and your Commissioner is JoAnn Birrell District 3. Commissioner Birrell is not involved in the Variance since it is in Marietta. MUST is currently in Unincorporated Cobb and wants to move into Marietta. Possible outcomes. Even if the Variance is Denied, game is not over. MUST can appeal to Council to overturn the BZA vote. We can still be involved. If MUST does not get a Deny overturned, they can appeal to Cobb Superior Court. Game is over at that point for residents unless the court upholds the decision of the Council to Deny. If the Variance is approved, residents can appeal to Council, particularly if no restrictions are placed on MUST. There is another possibility, a bit difficult for MUST – they can buy the 6.33 acres at 1260 and subdivide it, submit a new plat – and build a shelter without a public process if necessary. So it won't be over on August 28 - and if area residents continue to experience serious issues with the unsheltered men, there are some options to pursue in Unincorporated Cobb where MUST is based now. MUST has submitted a site plan to the City and it can be seen in the updated Variance application that can be downloaded here. You can learn about their plans for the new site and also learn what they don't want to agree to. Yep. http://www.mariettaga.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Item/564?fileID=2321 Contact email for BZA members if you want to send a letter individually. dhunter@littleandsmith.com, karenkirkpatrick@kw.com, fishhunt82@gmail.com, mmills2115@bellsouth.net, ron1223@bellsouth.net, bvanbure@amfam.com, justicekbarber@gmail.com, Did I mention that MUST had 394 Incident calls to 911 the past 12 months? It required 344 Cobb Police, 167 Marietta Fire engine visits and 43 Sheriff visits. Not all calls were serious but more were police-related than medical. MUST has 72 beds. Can you imagine the volume if MUST doubles in size? See you next Monday at City Hall.
