Loblaws, switch to compostable plastic bags in all of your stores.

Loblaws, switch to compostable plastic bags in all of your stores.
The Issue
Title: Loblaws, switch to compostable plastic bags in all your stores.
Loblaw Companies Limited is an industry leader whose brand power reaches across the country. This corporation has the opportunity to influence serious and positive changes that will help save our planet. According to their website, Loblaw’s purpose is “Live Life Well”. As days, months and years pass it will grow increasingly difficult to “Live Life Well” as our planet is continuously polluted by plastic bags from grocery stores. It’s time for Loblaws to lead by example and show that to “Live Life Well” they have to switch to compostable plastic bags or more sustainable options in all their stores. Sign this petition and urge Loblaw Companies Limited to use compostable plastics for both single-use checkout and produce bags.
2.86 BILLION plastic bags are thrown out annually, in Canada alone.
This is a HUGE problem. We can’t keep going on like this. Plastic waste is taking over our gardens, our parks, oceans and forests. It’s trapping and suffocating animals. We need to stop.
But not everybody wants to buy fancy, expensive, reusable bags that they might never use. Luckily, there is a solution.
The solution is compostable plastic checkout bags and produce bags which are already available in select supermarkets worldwide. But what IS compostable plastic?
Compostable utensils and materials are derived from renewable raw materials, such as corn, potatoes, soy protein, and more. Because compostables are already made from organic materials, they are not toxic in production and leave behind no toxic residue when composted (WC). Compostable materials can be composted in your green bin, or even in a garden compost. Your compost can help you nurture your garden, and will break down into carbon dioxide, water, inorganic compounds or biomass in about 90 days.
But why am I telling you all this?
Because I want you to know. I don’t want you to mindlessly sign this petition just because it will help something. I want you to understand why this petition has been created, and what you can do to help. I want you to know these facts, to know that there IS a solution. Because understanding will make your signature much more meaningful.
So please help me ensure that Loblaws and others take notice and do the right thing. This is an investment in our planet and our future. In fact, in 2012, Loblaws said this on packaging reduction: “None of us can solve packaging problems alone. We all need to do our part.” Starbucks is already investing millions into making compostable straws and coffee cups. They are leading the charge and it’s time for more companies to step up and take a stand. I’ll say it once more. Sign this petition and ask Loblaws to lead by example, and make the switch. Use compostable plastics for your single-use checkout and produce bags. Listen to the voices that want change. Listen to us.
