Dear Congresswoman Salazar,
This letter is written to you by three fellow Cuban Americans who have suffered and witnessed firsthand the repression, abuses, lack of freedom and crimes committed by the Cuban government against its people.
As Cuban Americans, we implore you to address the deplorable situation in our country Cuba. The atrocities that have taken place in Cuba are both a political emergency and a crime against humanity! Our brothers and sisters are being murdered, tortured and kidnapped while their mothers, fathers, sons and daughters, desperately cry out for their loved ones who are suffering at the hands of the Cuban government. Sadly, the whole world is being a silent witness and by its inaction, are complicit with the Cuban government’s injustice against its people.
We are lucky to live in a time when the Cuban government is unable to hide when they are killing and torturing our people. Today the tortures, murders and kidnapping are being witnessed and broadcasted to the world as they take place. The crimes against humanity committed by the Cuban regime are no longer documentaries written by our nostalgic ancestors that were easily discredited by communists around the world. Today, Cubans wake up to see their neighbors being murdered in front of them. We no longer need to prove that the Cuban regime has committed an insurmountable amount of atrocities against its people, we only need to advocate and defend against the obvious; the vicious repression of the Cuban people.
Today, our tragedies have names and faces. You will find a list of names and pictures of Cuban citizens whose whereabouts are unknown since the recent protests against the Cuban regime began. We ask that when you look at these names and faces, imagine that any one of these individuals could be your mother, father, brother, sister, or friend. Please inquire about the more than six hundred other missing Cubans whose whereabouts have been unaccounted for in over ten days and bear in mind that this list increases by the minute.
This letter is not only a petition or a demand for action. This is a desperate cry for support because WE KNOW YOU CARE as much as we do. We have witnessed how much you have done for our people while in Congress. However, it is not enough. We trust you have the audacious heart that will make you do what others may think impossible.
Our plea is that you use every political avenue within your means to demand that the U.S government take the following actions: the immediate release of all the political prisoners, sanctions against the people responsible for the crimes against humanity committed in Cuba now, and the release of the restrictions of the internet access in Cuba. We further ask you to petition the United Nations to use their operational power and release the “United Nations Peacekeeping Team” to protect the Cuban people from the atrocities they are victims of.
As attorneys we believe in the rule of law and human rights. We also believe that as a fellow Cuban American, you feel the pain and desperation of our people. We trust that you will be our voice uttering FREE CUBA to the U.S government.
