MANDATORY Life Skills Before Release
The Issue
Petition: Mandatory Life Skills Before Release – In Memory of Elijah Stroman
To our brothers and sisters inside—and the loved ones who stand with them:
This petition is for all of you.
For those still behind the wall who’ve said,
“The system never prepared us. It never cared.”
You’re right. And that’s exactly why this change is needed—because you deserve more than just freedom. You deserve a real shot at life.
Elijah Stroman was one of you.
A mentor. A leader. A brother.
He served 23 years in prison. He fought for his freedom and won.
But when Elijah came home, he faced a world he wasn’t prepared for.
He didn’t know how to use a phone, pay a bill, apply for a job, or navigate the internet.
He had never worked, never lived independently, never had the chance to learn the basic skills so many of us use daily.
He carried the weight of PTSD, anxiety, and overwhelming pressure.
Elijah tried to catch up fast—but it was too much, too soon. And he’s not the only one.
This petition demands mandatory life skills training before release. Not optional. Not surface-level. Real programs. Real preparation.
For our people inside:
You deserve hands-on training that teaches:
Smartphone and internet use
Job search skills and interview prep
Managing finances, credit, and bills
Basic daily tasks like shopping, cooking, and scheduling
Mental health support and emotional readiness
For our people outside—families, friends, and loved ones:
We need your voice to make this happen.
Your support helps show that this isn’t just about policy—it’s about people.
People like Elijah, who didn’t get the tools he needed before release.
People like your brother, your sister, your son, your father—coming home next.
Together, we can break this cycle.
Together, we can honor Elijah’s life and legacy.
Together, we can make sure no one leaves prison unprepared for life.
Free the REAL. Prepare the REAL. Protect the REAL.
