With the enormous growth of delivery apps and the increase in gig workers servicing this need, sharing roads and pavements with the general public; I feel that now is the time for cyclists who are using their cycle for work in this way should be legally obligated to have insurance in place when carrying out their job. This should be mandatory to help ensure that all parties to any accidents caused by the cyclists have the ability to identify and successfully claim against them; especially when negligence was a major cause. Having this insurance would also help to improve the standard of cycling and the adherence to the actual Highway Code with non adherence being penalised with greater premiums from the insurance companies as is the case for other road users. Any company who utilises these gig workers would jointly be responsible for ensuring that the riders have insurance at all times. The insurance companies could also stipulate the need to wear protective clothing ie helmets, reflective jackets and proper cycling footwear making the job less risky so another benefit too. Adherence to the actual rules would make it safer for pedestrians and animals who have to share the public space with these cyclists, of who many are targeted to deliver asap. The uses of delivery apps has changed the way society interacts with each other and a requirement for insurance is long overdue
