Mandate USPS to Offer Consumers an Opt-Out of Direct Mail Marketing

The Issue

100% of consumers interviewed by CDHQ admit to discarding junk mail, used or unused. This is not only my personal experience but a nationwide issue. Each American household receives approximately 848 pieces of junk mail annually. This amounts to billions of unwanted direct mailers produced across all states, contributing significantly to municipal waste and deforestation, with the loss of 100 million trees per year.

Junk mail represents an unnecessary form of paper waste that occupies about 26% of our landfills (2023). It's time we take action against this wasteful practice that harms our environment and clutters our homes with unwanted advertisements.

We urge lawmakers to create legislation mandating the United States Postal Service (USPS) nationwide to provide consumers with the option to opt-out from all direct mail marketing sent to their homes. By doing so, we can reduce paper waste, save countless trees, and give consumers more control over what enters their mailbox.

Here are the top 5 states producing the most direct mailers:

  • California: 11,208,512,928 mailers created
  • Texas: 8,682,961,168 mailers created
  • Florida: 6,725,753,424 mailers created
  • New York: 6,385,567,200 mailers created
  • Pennsylvania: 4,240,000,000 mailers created

Yes the calculations above are in billions. This proposal aims to allow consumers (of all states) the option to deny direct mail marketing.

I DONT WANT YOUR MONEY.
Simply sign this petition if you believe in reducing unnecessary waste and preserving our environment for future generations.

Note to key decision maker, United States Postal Service (USPS):

This can be added to your website: The function of the python code below denies junk mail for residents with USPS online accounts.

Deploying this basic code will immediately impact our environment, reducing waste across multiple sectors. Legislation can be lengthy! This is why the cooperation of the United States Postal Service is imperative!
