Mandate Upgrade of Public Playgrounds in Vicksburg, MS to Modern Standards by Summer 2025

Mandate Upgrade of Public Playgrounds in Vicksburg, MS to Modern Standards by Summer 2025
The Issue
We, concerned citizens and parents, are deeply worried about the diminishing physical activity among our youth. A recent British study highlighted that children spend twice as much time inside playing video games compared to outdoor play. Consequently, childhood obesity rates are skyrocketing, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting a 19.7% childhood obesity rate in the United States. This grim reality underscores the importance of encouraging physical activity in our youth, but our children's play areas are falling short. Public playgrounds in Vicksburg and Warren County, Mississippi, are uninviting, unmaintained, and lack safety features.
We urge the City of Vicksburg, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, the Park and Recreation Department of Vicksburg, Warren County Board of Supervisors to upgrade all public playgrounds to meet the modern equipment standards and state compliance codes in Mississippi by the summer of 2025. The issue must also be placed on the agenda for the upcoming board meeting for both city and county government boards of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Warren County, Mississippi.
If we invest wisely and maintain our public recreational spaces, we can give our children safe and appealing places to play, encouraging greater physical activity and reducing childhood obesity rates. We are asking what our tax dollars are doing if not supporting our children’s health and well-being? The future of our children is at stake - let's commit to making it bright. Please, sign this petition to urge our local officials to prioritize playground upgrades and maintenance now.
