The Issue
Recently, I had an experience with a car hire company that left me frustrated and concerned. I booked a vehicle with high expectations, only to receive a car significantly smaller than what was advertised, and the baggage sizing chart is not truthful or useful to requirements. I.e when hiring on holiday, you want to know how many standard size suitcases a car boot will fit plus basic hand luggage as this is what most people bring. "5 bags" for example, is not an accurate enough example when you are requiring to book an unknown car which can vary in size to even as much as 120L of boot space.
What was even more troubling was discovering that the car provided didn't even match the category as defined by the manufacturer's own specifications. This misleading practice needs to change, as it leaves customers feeling deceived and affects travel plans.
Equally worrying was the condition of the child car seats offered by the company. They were poorly maintained, cheap, and haphazardly stored in open lockers for customers to choose from. The lack of quality control over such crucial safety equipment is alarming. Properly maintained child seats are vital for the safety of our children, and it should be an absolute priority for car hire companies to uphold these standards.
Petitioning for change means advocating for transparency and accountability. Car hire companies should be required to truthfully list the exact make and model of each car available for hire within each category. This simple step would eliminate confusion and ensure customers receive precisely what they've paid for.
Moreover, a standardised stock of child car seats, compliant with current safety regulations, must be maintained by these companies. Staff should be adequately trained to assist with the correct installation of these seats whenever required. Such measures would go a long way in ensuring the safety and satisfaction of all customers, especially those traveling with young children.
