Mandate the City of Albany Water Treatment to Meet EWG Standards
The Issue
I am deeply invested in the health of our city's residents and it is a personal concern to me as our women are increasingly developing cervical cancer and experiencing poor hygiene conditions due to bathing in contaminated water. This concern arises from the dangerous and harmful pollutants, including carcinogenic chemicals, present in our city's water supply. According to a national survey commissioned by the Environmental Working Group, more than 170 million people in the United States are exposed to carcinogens in their drinking water. These carcinogens are known to increase the risk of developing cancer and yet our city is failing to adequately treat our water to meet the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) standards (source: EWG, 2019). This clear negligence is causing health concerns and decreasing the quality of life for our citizens. It is shameful that we even have to ask for clean, safe, and healthy water. It is time for the city to mandate the water treatment facilities to strictly adhere to the EPA standards and immediately remove all harmful pollutants from our water supply. Signing this petition is a step towards calling on our local government to prioritize the health of its citizens by ensuring safe and clean water. Your signature matters, let's demand clean water now!
